Once upon a time there was a fox named Henry. Henry lived by himself and got so lonely sometimes that he talked to the the trees. So one day Henry decided to find a friend. He packed himself a lunch of blackberries and a honey sandwich and off he went.
Henry was walking for a long time and the sun beat down on him. He was thirsty so he decided to stop and get a drink from a nearby pond. As he lapped up the delicious sparkling water he heard a croak. It was a frog sitting on a lily pad in the middle of the pond.
"Hello, Mr. Frog," Henry said excitedly, "Will you be my friend?"
"Only if you can swim over here," the frog croaked in reply.
Henry had never learned how to swim but he was desperate for a friend, so he put one paw in the water and then the next. By the time it was up to his neck, Henry started to panic. The water went over his head and Henry struggled to stay above the water! He kicked and pushed backwards frantically until he found himself back on shore. Henry lay panting, trying to get his wits about him again.
"Sorry, Mr. Fox, but I cannot be your friend," and with that the frog hopped back into the water, leaving Henry soaking wet and sad.
Henry shook himself and let the warm sun dry his pelt before he started walking again. It was almost noon and the sun was hotter than ever. So, he decided to take a lunch break and sat down on a mossy stump. Henry was almost done with his honey sandwich when he heard singing. He looked left, then right, but saw nothing. Henry then looked up. There was a beautiful robin in the trees!
"Ms. Robin, will you be my friend," the fox asked hopefully?
"Only if you can come up here," the robin sang in reply.
So Henry backed up and took a running jump but slid down the trunk of the tree. He tried several more times before he gave up.
"Sorry Mr. Fox, but I will not be your friend," and with that, the robin flew off.
Henry sat down and started to cry. He cried and cried until he was all out of tears.
"Hello Mr. Fox, are you okay," a small voice asked?
Henry sniffed and looked up. It was a small hedgehog!
"I can't find a friend," Henry sniffed sadly.
"Well I'll be your friend," the hedgehog said, "My name is Oliver!"
"Hello Oliver, my name is Henry," Henry said exitedly!
And they became best friends and lived happily ever after!
