Bethany Hamilton
Bethany Hamilton has become a source of inspiration through her story of faith, determination, and hope. I haven't thought about her in a while, but I first read her book in 4th grade, and i remember how much I wanted to be like her. She was born into a family of surfers on February 8, 1990, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Bethany began surfing at a very young age. When she was eight years old, Bethany entered her first surf competition and she won both the short and long board divisions. This sparked within her, a love for surf and competition. From a young age, Bethany’s parents instilled their faith in Jesus Christ: and at age 5, she made the decision to have a personal relationship with Him. Bethany’s foundation of faith has been her backbone and strength.
At the young age of thirteen, on October 31, 2003, Bethany was surfing off the North Shore of Kauai with friends and was attacked by a 14-foot tigershark. The attack had severed her left arm and she lost 60% of her blood. Her father, who was scheduled to have knee surgery that morning, was already at the hospital, but she took his place in the operating room. Luckily, she made it through several surgeries without infection. Soon, Bethany was on her way to recovery with an unbelievably positive attitude. Doctors and lifeguards believe her strong faith in God helped her through such a traumatic ordeal.
After waiting only one month after the attack, Bethany returned to the water to pursue her goal as a professional surfer. Bethany won her first National Title a year after the attack. She took 1st place in the Explorer Women’s division of the 2005 NSSA National Championships. In 2007, Bethany went pro. Since then, she has participated in several ASP and World Tour Events.
October 2004, Bethany published an autobiography entitled Soul Surfer and shared her life story. After waiting seven years, the book was made into a major motion picture, and was released in theaters on April 2011. Bethany just launched her own foundation, Friends of Bethany, which supports shark attack survivors and traumatic amputees. She is also involved in several other charitable efforts. August 18, at 23 years old, Bethany married Adam Dirks.
I have many reasons for choosing Bethany Hamilton as my role model. She went through a huge traumatic experience and lost her arm, but did she quit? No. She got back into the water the first chance she got. She was determined.Bethany didn’t let the shark attack scare her away from what she loves. It was an obstacle and she got over it. I admire people like her that keep on going. She gives to charity and helps others like her. She is a huge source of inspiration. Most importantly, she is big on her faith in God, and she said that’s what helped her. Like I said earlier, it was her backbone of strength. If I was in her place, I can’t tell you what I would have done, but I hope I would have been as brave as her. This is why I chose Bethany Hamilton as my role model.
